One source said authorities received a tip off about the hideouts of the individuals, who they suspect of being members of Hasm, a group which has claimed several attacks around the Egyptian capital targeting judges and policemen since previous year.

On Sunday, police said they stormed a militant hideout in a Greater Cairo district, killing 10 suspected militants and seizing a cache of weapons.

Egypt has been suffering from a spike in terrorist attacks targeting civilians in the mainland over the past year. The apartments were allegedly occupied by members of a militant cell planning terror attacks in the capital.

The duel raids also led to the injury of three police officers, three conscripts from the Central Security Forces, in addition to the injury of an officer from the National Security Agency and another two police personnel.

The officials said the militants were members of Hasm, a breakaway Brotherhood faction that has targeted police and army officers in Cairo over the past year in a series of brazen attacks.

Private newspaper al-Masry al-Youm, citing security sources, reported that the slain extremists were from the self-styled Hasm group, which authorities accuse of being the armed wing of the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
