U.S. citizen fighting for ISIS in Syria surrenders to US-backed forces

But during a State Department briefing on Thursday, spokesperson Heather Nauert said she had no further information on the individual's circumstances, saying anyone who would fight for ISIS is "dumb".

A USA citizen who allegedly fought for Islamic State has surrendered to American-backed forces in Syria and is in US custody, according to the Pentagon, a rare case of an American captured on the battlefield.

According to the piece, the USA -backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is predominantly led by the PKK's Syrian affiliate PYD, took him under custody.

Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon said the United States citizen has been legally detained by Department of Defense personnel as a known enemy combatant.

A spokesperson for the US military command in Syria informed the Daily Beast, who first reported on the matter, that the detainee would be "transported humanely" back to the United States. This could mean that the American ISIS fighters are now slashed in numbers.

"You can't be very bright if you're going over there and doing that". "As a precondition for Coalition support, SDF and Iraqi forces have pledged to observe worldwide laws and the laws of armed conflict", the command told the Daily Beast.

The unnamed man is not the first American seized for participating in combat for ISIS.

"We defer to the U.S. Department of Justice and the Government of Iraq on this issue".

Mohamad Jamal Khweis, 27, spent about 2-1/2 months in early 2016 traveling with Islamic State fighters in Syria and Iraq and participating in the group's religious training.
