Hamas Signaling Unity Government With Fatah Is Possible

The militant group Hamas has agreed to a series of key conditions with rival movement Fatah which could signal the end of a 10-year-long feud in Palestine.

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas's western-backed Palestine Authority, which is controlled by Fatah, fought a war with Hamas over Gaza in 2007, which led to Hamas taking over.

But Fatah said it still needed clarification from Hamas on the handing over of government ministries in Gaza and control of the enclave's border crossings with Israel and Egypt.

The Palestinian movement of Hamas said it chose to dissolve its administrative committee and expressed readiness to launch talks with the Fatah movement, Hamas said in a statement.

Egypt has been brokering talks with Abbas's Fatah group to implement a deal signed in 2011 in Cairo with Islamist Hamas to end its dispute and form an interim government before elections.

Repeated attempts at reconciliation between the two factions have failed in the past.

"The Hamas movement is prepared to overcome all of the obstacles together with the Egyptians in order to achieve the Palestinian people's aspirations through the reconciliation and unity".

Those reasons, coupled with an escalating sewage crisis that threatens the health of Gaza Strip residents and has ruined the Strip's beaches is contaminating the strip's beaches, and a crippling unemployment, have all contributed Hamas finally, maybe, crying Uncle.

The last legislative election was held in 2006, which Hamas won. However, in July 2014, Israel waged a large-scale military offensive on the Gaza Strip that last 50 days.

Talal Oukal, a Gaza-based political analyst and academic said there is apparently "a wave of optimism this time because it seems that the Egyptians are more serious than before", adding that Hamas and Egypt's ties are getting better, so Hamas "is keen to keep these ties good with Egypt".

Bjorn Brenner, the author of Gaza Under Hamas, said that Hamas agreed to disband its administrative committee because it has come under the pressure to deliver to the people of Gaza.

Officials also said more information was needed before considering it a done deal.

"If the news is correct, that is good and positive", Fatah Vice Chairman Mahmoud al-Aloul said in a statement posted on Fatah's official Facebook page.
