Irish airline tries to improve punctuality by cancelling flights

Robin Kiely, Ryanair's head of communications, said: "We will be doing our utmost to arrange alternative flights and/or full refunds".

Many customers complained that it was hard to find out what flights were cancelled and called on the airline to give accurate information regarding which flights were cancelled prompting them to create a specific page.

Ryanair also blamed strike action and weather disruption; together with increased staff holiday allocations, this meant the airline's punctuality fell below 80%.

The couple went to Bordeaux airport early on Saturday morning to explore other options, but found no Ryanair staff.

Dublin flights affected today include flights to & from Brussels, Amsterdam, Manchester, London Gatwick, Bristol and Barcelona.

A Tweet from Ryanair itself states that "Your flight is operating as scheduled unless you have received a cancellation mail".

Ryanair on Friday announced plans to cancel between 40 and 50 flights per day until the end of October, disrupting hundreds of thousands of journeys, in what it said was a bid to improve its ratio of on-time flights.

Ryanair said it would contact customers affected by the cancellations immediately with an offer of alternative flights or full refunds.

Ryanair Holdings PLC scrapped 82 flights on Sunday, the start of a six-week program of cancellations it's making as it seeks to reduce a backlog of crew vacation required by Irish regulators before the end of the year.

The Commission for Aviation Regulation has said it is expecting a large number of claims for compensation from Irish travellers affected by the cancellations.

The cancellation crisis could ultimately affect between 308,000 and 385,000 passengers over the period. 'They heard their flight to Alicante was being cancelled an hour before it was due to leave, ' Martijn said by phone from Spain.

Passengers will receive a notification in advance informing them if their flight is delayed or cancelled.

Ryanair apologised for the inconvenience caused to customers by these cancellations. They say they were told that they could claim for only one night's hotel stay, even though their entitlement under European passenger-rights law is clear: the cancelling airline must book and pay for hotels, as well as meals, until the passenger can be flown home.

Ryanair marketing officer Kenny Jacobs said affected customers with bookings up to 20 September had been informed.
