Pak developed short-range nuke weapons to counter India's "Cold Start" doctrine: Abbasi

Abbasi's visit to NY to attend the 72nd session of United Nations General Assembly comes at a time when tensions between U.S. and Pakistan are running high in the wake of Trump's Afghan and South Asia policy. Trump had said that Pakistan had much to "gain from partnering with our effort in Afghanistan", much to the dislike of Pakistan.

A statement released also said that Pakistan has an interest in Afghanistan's peace and stability and the country has dealt with the Afghan refugee problem after the withdrawal of Russian Federation.

While addressing the gathering he also said that Pakistan and U.S. should further strengthen its relationship, despite all the differences between the two countries.

Pakistan had short-range nuclear weapons to counter "Cold Start" doctrine being followed by Indian army, he said, adding the country does not have fielded tactical nuclear weapons.

To a question he said "Pakistan does not foresee any political or military role of India in Afghanistan".

Making tall claims of having destroyed terrorism and terror networks in Pakistan at a time when Pak-based terror outfits like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba have been called out by global forums like BRICS and the UN, Abbasi said: "This perception that there are (terrorist) sanctuaries (in Pakistan) is absolutely not correct".

When questioned on the U.S. drone strike Abbasi replied that the sovereignty of Pakistan should be respected by all the forces operating in that region.

The Pakistani Prime Minister tactfully avoided answering on relations between the Haqqani network and Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI.

An official statement from the Pakistan PM's office said, "Prime Minister shared Pakistan's concerns and views with regard to the United States strategy for South Asia" adding that the discussions with VP Pence took place in a "cordial atmosphere". "We have always stressed North Korea to behave responsibly, as per the world community wants", he said. He denied that he had any health issues and said it was his duty that if he had some information, he should have shared it with Pakistani security forces.

UN Secretary General said Pakistan is very dear to his heart.

He said that Pakistan has asked Afghanistan to provide coordinates for any terrorist sanctuary that it alleges exists in Pakistan and "we will take action against that sanctuary".

The defence minister, Khurram Dastgir, had also gone on record to say the Pakistan had no "safe haven" for terrorists on its soil, as he rejected the declaration naming terrorist groups in the region by leaders of member countries at the BRICS Summit.
