'We Are Not A Bargaining Chip!': Dreamers Confront Nancy Pelosi

Pelosi has led the Democratic caucus in the House since 2003 and has said she would have retired had Hillary Clinton won last year's presidential election. "We can discuss other issues, but we are not going to discuss how we protect the Dreamers".

Pelosi was holding the conference with fellow California Democratic House members Barbara Lee and Jared Huffman to call for the passage of the DREAM Act, which would allow recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) and other undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as minors to remain in the country. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) appeared at an event created to call on Congress to immediately pass the Dream Act, bipartisan legislation that would enshrine legal protections for hundreds of thousands of "dreamers" into law. "We are immigrant youth, undocumented and unafraid", they shouted as they overtook an event Pelosi was holding with Democratic U.S. Reps.

In video accounts of the press conference, protesters were shown chanting "Listen to us", and "Do you know how bad it hurts?"

"Just stop it now, just stop it now, just stop it", Pelosi shouted before leaving the event.

Pelosi is in her home city to call for legislation that would protect young immigrants brought to the US illegally as children or by parents who overstayed visas.

He pointed out that Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer met with President Trump in an effort to strike a deal on the "Dreamers" behalf, and now "Dreamers" and DACA-supporting protesters are turning on them.

A leading House Democrat said he isn't surprised by President Donald Trump's recent willingness to work with Democratic congressional leaders because, he said, Trump has "no ideology".

By doing so, they would answer, to their own detriment, the question Trump posed on Twitter Thursday morning: "Does anybody really want to throw out good, educated and accomplished young people who have jobs, some serving in the military?"

In August, Trump threatened to close down the government if that's what it took to get the wall built over objections to "obstructionist Democrats". Jared Huffman and Mike Thompson.

"In some ways I feel we are negotiating against ourselves", the governor said. However, the 38-year-old congressman said he has no plans to personally challenge her for the role. Other Sacramento-area lawmakers also took the stage to support the Dream Act.

They say that they have convinced Trump that protecting immigrants now covered by DACA is the right policy and the right political move for a president with poor approval ratings.

"Protecting their families is of course the logical next step", she said again of the DREAMers.

Regarding the scope of border-security measures, Schumer said he signaled support for four points of toughened security: electronic surveillance at the Mexican border, detection devices focused on drug smugglers, improved infrastructure along the border and more search helicopters. That support, however, does not seep into Trump's base, which was further angered when Pelosi and Schumer said the DACA deal they had talked about with the president did not include funding for a border wall.
