Mexico in three-day countdown to search for earthquake survivors

In Mexico City, 187 people died in 38 buildings that collapsed.

The Popocatepetl volcano, which is visible on a clear day to the 20 million people who live in the Mexico City metropolitan region, spewed vapour and a ash after two small eruptions on Saturday. It was powerful enough to once again send residents running into the streets.

Mexico City's infamous traffic jams were back on Monday as offices re-opened after last week's deadly quake, but closed schools and clusters of homeless people served as reminders that life in the megalopolis has not yet returned to normal.

A system of quake sensors was set up in 1993 along the Pacific coast, where tremors are more common.

The rescue took place at an apartment building in a southern neighbourhood of the capital.

Rescue workers had told journalists they were certain a girl was alive beneath the rubble, but the different versions of the story varied widely.

Relatives of people who are presumably buried under the rubble of a building toppled by a magnitude 7.1 quake that struck central Mexico nearly a week ago protest as they talk to the media in Mexico City, on September 25, 2017.

Trapped under tons of rubble and in complete darkness, Diana Pacheco's hopes were fading fast for making it out alive from a collapsed office building after a huge natural disaster in Mexico City, despite rescuers' frantic attempts to reach her.

With tears in his eyes, he recalled the "marvel" of so many volunteers showing up by foot or on motorbike not only in the rubble piles but also to distribute aid to victims on foot, or by bicycle and motorbike.

Survivors of another sort were found in the rubble of two crumpled buildings: a little white schnauzer dog and a squawking green parrot named Lucas. But, Garcia says, "We wanted to make sure that we had something based in law to protect us".

The building is one of a dwindling number of collapse sites where crews still have hopes of finding people alive.

The latest death toll stands at 320, of which 182 of the fatalities were recorded in Mexico City.

Rescuers have pulled a small dog alive from the rubble of a building that collapsed in Mexico City after Tuesday's deadly quake.

"It was like a miracle because I was the only one who got the message and since I was there with the rescue workers I talked to them and they could locate her", said Garcia.

Tuesday's quake left at least 305 dead.

Civil Defense chief Luis Felipe Puente reported Sunday on Twitter that 181 people died in Mexico City.

After almost a week of eerie quiet in the sprawling city of 20 million people, the capital's notorious traffic jams were starting to appear again.

The rest of the deaths occurred in the states of Morelos, Mexico, Puebla, Guerrero and Oaxaca.
