WAFU CUP 2017 : Ghana thrash Nigeria 4-1 in final

Hosts Ghana are hoping that their West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup of Nations triumph over Nigeria will help ease the pain of failing to qualify for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

From one of such raids in the Nigeria defence, rasta-haired Sarfo capitalised on a loose ball around the visitors 18-yard box and unleashed a grounder which went straight into the net for Ghana's imminent opener on the 43rd minute.

A brace from Stephen Sarfo and a goal each from Vincent Atingah and Winful Cobbinah saw the Black Stars defend the WAFU Cup title they lifted in 2013.

Both Captain Ikechukwu Ezenwa who was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament and Ghana's goalkeeper Addo were in top shape as they made several vital saves to keep the score-line goalless.

Stephen Sarfo put the victory beyond doubt when he converted from the spot on 78 minutes to make it 3-0 and register his fourth goal fourth of the tournament.

The Ghanaians kept piling the pressure on the Eagles defence and Patrick Razak won a penalty for Ghana in the 73rd minute just seconds after coming in.

But the Ifeanyi Ubah FC goalkeeper was awarded with the Golden Glove for his impressive performances.

Nigeria's consolation goal was scored by Rabiu Ali in the dying seconds of the added time from a free kick given few metres outside the 22metres box of the Black Stars.

In his post match interview, Super Eagles' Coach, Salisu Yusuf, saidL "We lost to a good team".

"The game against Nigeria is very important because we want to take revenge for the loss last time around".

"The Super Eagles have become used to winning, from winning the CHAN ticket to conquering Sierra Leone and even Ghana here to reach the final, and we can not stop now. Maxwell must even say that enough is enough, I have done my best for the team and someone else should also try", said coach Kobina Amissah.
