Sitharaman reviews security in J&K, meets CM, Governor (Second Lead)

"After landing in Srinagar, the defence minister visited the forward areas along LoC in north Kashmir to review operational preparedness of the troops", defence sources said.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman who is on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir will today visit the Ladakh region where she will take stock of the situation along the LAC.

Sitharaman, who is on a two-day trip to the state, visited the Chinar Corps headquarters after her arrival.

Indian Special Forces, on 29 September 2016, had conducted surgical strikes against terror launch pads across Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Chairing her first DAC meeting, defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman approved the "Acceptance of Necessity" for the Indian Navy to procure upgraded sonar for its destroyers and frigates through the "Buy Indian (Indigenously designed, developed and manufactured)" route at a cost of almost Rs 200 crore.

As she landed in the state in the Old Airfield, she was received by the Northern Army Commander and Chinar Corps Commander.

Sitharaman also met Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti here this evening.

He had said, "There is need to change the discourse (on J&K) for future generations".

She was subsequently briefed by Gen Anbu at Badami Bagh Cantonment on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and given an overview of the counter-infiltration and counter-terrorist operations undertaken in the recent past, the statement said.

According to him, Sitharaman appreciated the effectiveness of the intelligence and operational grids and commended the troops "for excellent operational successes that have contributed significantly to a secure environment in the state".

Sitharaman complimented the army commanders for the high level of synergy achieved with the J&K Police and CAPF.
