Uber boss to meet London transport chief

Former Uber driver Jeffrey also said that he has his own auto, but those who don't own one can borrow a vehicle from Uber and be an Uber driver as long as they have driving records.

Theresa May has hit out at Transport for London's decision not to renew Uber's operating licence in London. "Irrespective of whether we did everything that is being said about us in London today (and to be clear, I don't think we did), it really matters what people think of us".

"I know a lot of drivers who are quitting Uber", he said.

Its five-year license had been renewed for a further four months in May, as TfL continued to look into criticisms directed at Uber, including concerns about public safety.

Khosrowshahi will sit down with Mike Brown, the commissioner for transportation for London, the regulator that last week revoked Uber's licence. That was when I first learned about Uber, the service they were complaining about, and I immediately signed up.

TFL has slammed the company for its approach to customer safety, claiming it was "not fit and proper" to operate in London - and blamed "public safety and security implications" for its decision.

He said the firm's identifier service can be used in the driver enrolment process, to link the driver with their formal identification documents and to remove duplicate, false or black-listed identities. "We have always followed TfL rules on reporting serious incidents, with a dedicated team that works closely with the Metropolitan Police". He said that if a driver is faced "with threat of assault by a passenger and asks him to leave, she risks complaints and low ratings, with no right of reply, and ultimately may lose her job as a result". Yaseen Aslam, one of the claimants, said drivers "face many struggles" and "carry all the risks".

"Last year drivers using our app made average fares of 15 pounds ($20.13) per hour after our service fee", the company said. "The position of drivers who use the App is materially identical to the (familiar and long-established) position of self-employed private hire drivers who operate under the auspices of traditional minicab firms", Uber had said in its court submission.

But the firm has sparked concern over the way it deals with criminal offences and driver background checks. Reportedly, it allows Uber to identify customers suspected of working for authorities in order to avoid giving them a lift.
