Ukip elects Henry Bolton as the party's new leader

In the run-up to the announcement at the party conference in Torquay, a seaside resort on Britain's south coast, there was an air of slight trepidation.

Farage temporarily returned to the leadership and was then replaced by Paul Nuttall MEP, who promised to win pro-Brexit Labour-held constituencies in the north of England.

On policy, Mr Bolton stressed Islam was "more dominating" than Christianity but said he would ditch Ukip's general election "integration agenda", which focused nearly entirely on Muslims, declaring: "We need to look at the integration of all immigrant communities".

Henry Bolton began the party's leadership contest as an apparent also-ran in a race which seemed to be between current deputy leader Peter Whittle and hardliner Anne Marie Waters who had described Islam as "evil".

Ms Waters came second in the leadership contest, with 21.3% of the 12,915 votes cast.

Waters' defeat indicates the party is likely to keep its focus on Brexit instead of expanding it to include Islam.

Bolton, an infantry officer who also served in the police, was elected the UK Independence Party's fourth leader in a year with 3874 votes, 30 per cent of the total.

A banner was superimposed with an image of Mr Farage posing as Adolf Hitler with the European Union logo in the background.

Mr Hamilton reiterated his defence of the candidacy of anti-Islam campaigner Anne Marie Waters, saying she had been "demonised".

"We can't lead the nation and we can't hold the government to account and we can't achieve our core objective at all", he said. I do not see myself as being your leader, I see myself as serving this party.

"If you look at the things I've done, you'll see a certain degree of endurance there, both physical, emotional and political", he said.

Asked if he would "ban the burka", Mr Bolton said: "I don't think it's about banning the burka, is it?"

Ukip have just announced their new leader - and it's not who you would expect. "I abhor the rhetoric that we are at war with Islam". Instead he suffered a hefty defeat in February's Stoke-on-Trent Central by-election and later resigned after leading the party to a disastrous result in the snap general election.
