Moscow holds 'consultations' with North Korea diplomat

A senior North Korean official in charge of USA affairs arrived in Vladivostok on Monday to speak with a Russian ambassador on ways of dealing with rising tensions between Washington and Pyongyang.

Moscow says Russian and North Korean diplomats will meet in Moscow on September 29 to discuss the Korean crisis.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova declined to give details, but said her ministry would issue a statement after the meeting.

Referring to the talks, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told a regular press briefing on Thursday: "I can't see that as a bad thing".

Russian Federation and China have previously said they both support a "suspension-for-suspension" approach to reign in North Korea's missile and nuclear weapons program. Thousands of USA soldiers are stationed in South Korea and Japan.

The article said that missile-defense physics may require USA interceptors to fly into "the teeth of the Russian early warning net".

Burmistrov spoke then with North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Sin Hong Chol, who said Pyongyang would continue to strengthen its nuclear capabilities and would not negotiate on them with the USA unless Washington abandoned its hostile policy, the official Korean Central News Agency reported at the time.

Russian Federation has warned of "catastrophic consequences" if military conflict is allowed to break out on the Korean peninsula.

The most likely trajectory of a North Korean ICBM fired at the USA would mean interception would happen over Russian airspace, US officials have conceded in a new article published by DefenseOne.

He suggested then that a neutral European country could mediate.

Russian leaders have been particularly alarmed in recent weeks after senior United States officials did not rule out armed force against Pyongyang. "It argues that crippling North Korea's economy is undesirable since it will lead to potential political instability and Russia's worst fear-regime change", she added.
