Pep Guardiola Says Benjamin Mendy Out Until April with Knee Injury

Manchester City's disappointment that Benjamin Mendy will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury was compounded yesterday, after the Premier League giants received news that Sergio Aguero was involved in a auto crash in Amsterdam on Thursday.

"It is really frustrating for him, first as a person, but like what happened with Ilkay Gundogan past year, I am sad for him", manager Pep Guardiola said following his team's Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

Antonio Conte's side have recovered brilliantly after their opening-day defeat to Burnley - and they were only side to beat City home and away last season.

"I don't know right now [if City will sign someone]". "I think days off are for players to be happy".

City splashed out £52million to bring Mendy to Manchester from Monaco during the summer.

The City boss said afterwards that Mendy was facing a much longer absence than originally thought.

"Bad news guys - I'll be joining Injury FC on loan for a couple months with ruptured ACL. but will be back soon & stronger hopefully", the 23-year-old tweeted. City's midweek match against Shakhtar Donetsk saw Fabian Delph fill in Mendy's position, and the only other suitable option ahead of the club's weekend encounter with Chelsea comes in the form of natural right back Danilo.

It was rotten luck for someone who is looking to stamp his mark on that left back position at the Etihad Stadium following Pep Guardiola's defensive overhaul this summer.
