Canadian Cop Stabbed In Terror Attack

A police officer was stabbed Saturday evening near the Commonwealth stadium in Edmonton, Canada.

A Daesh flag was later found in the auto, said police.

Police said that an Islamic State flag was found in one of the vehicles and has been seized as evidence. After striking the officer, the man got out of his auto and stabbed him several times, then fled on foot.

The officer managed to fight off the attacker who then fled the area on foot.

Knecht said both incidents are related and are being investigated as terrorism.

The policeman was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries while a manhunt was launched.

Knecht said one person is in custody and police believe he acted alone but are not ruling out others may be involved.

Police say the van attempted to "deliberately hit" the pedestrians at a crossing, with the van eventually flipping onto its side on a busy street in downtown Edmonton.

"I thought a shot gun went off", witness Pat Hannigan said, describing the sound van made when it hit the sidewalk.

Shortly afterwards, a van driver rammed into four pedestrians at least.

The suspect, aged 30, is known to police, added Mr Knecht. The suspect fled the scene with at least a dozen police vehicles in pursuit.

"While the investigation continues, early reports indicate that this is another example of the hate that we must remain ever vigilant against", he said. "The vehicle struck the officer "sending him flying through the air 15 feet before colliding with the officer's cruiser" at high speed", Edmonton Journal reported.

Hours later, about midnight local time, Edmonton police stopped a white U-Haul at an impaired driving checkpoint, according to NBC News.

In 2015, investigators from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police received a note about a young man sharing extremist views.

Police chased the U-Haul truck, which ultimately tipped over.

The police will hold a new press briefing at 3:00 pm Eastern Time.

"To the best of our knowledge, this was a lone-wolf attack", Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson said.

In a statement Mr Trudeau said: "We can not - and will not - let violent extremism take root in our communities".
