Solar power fastest growing energy industry in 2016

Getting closer to coal: IEA predicts that renewables' share of global power generation will be 30% in 2022, up from 24 percent past year, with hydropower remaining the largest total source over the forecast period. The IEA said the main drivers remain strong for new onshore wind and solar capacities, such as federal tax incentives combined with renewable portfolio standards as well as state-level policies for distributed solar PV.

The US is to be the second-largest growth market for renewables despite uncertainties about the policy.

The agency said power generation is set to rise by more than a third to 8,169 terawatt-hours (TWh), which is equal to the total power consumption of China, India and Germany combined.

"Our expectation is that (growth in) renewable electricity generation in the next five years will be higher than electricity generation from coal and natural gas times two", IEA executive director Fatih Birol told journalists.

NRDC's fifth annual energy report, America's Clean Energy Revolution, confirms the massive shifts in the nation's energy landscape, dominated by clean energy progress, both with records shattered in the past year and a half and from what the U.S. Energy Information (EIA) projected a decade earlier.

China remains the undisputed leader of renewable electricity capacity expansion during the forecast period with more than 360 GW of capacity coming online, or 40 per cent of the global total.

New solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity increased by 50 percent in 2016, according to a renewables market analysis and forecast from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Misjudged the huge increases in solar power, forecasting less than 1 gigawatt (GW) of installed solar by 2016 when the total was 46 times that amount, and no more than 18 GW of wind power, when it reached 82 GW - a almost five-fold increase.

Despite the U.S. now being the second largest solar energy creator, analysts hinted that USA federal policy could hamper growth in solar capacity.

This would be the first time solar power has surpassed any other fuel as a power source. Most new demand for electricity is being supplied by renewable resources, with solar providing the most. The government's ambition of 160 GW renewable energy generation by 2022 is expected to make the prices more competitive. Nearly 165 gigawatts (GW) came online in 2016, with the IEA adding that renewable electricity capacity looked set to grow by 43 percent by the year 2022.
