Elon Musk, Puerto Rico talk possibility of Tesla rebuilding its power grid

Tesla is among the US companies sending rooftop panels and batteries to Puerto Rico, where more than 90 percent of homes and businesses remain without electricity after Hurricane Maria destroyed the grid. If Musk and Rossello are able to pull something off, Puerto Rico may find a better energy solution amid its misery: A state-of-the-art, renewable, distributed electric system better prepared to take on the needs of the island, and any future disasters.

On Twitter, Musk said that his technology, which powers several smaller islands, could be scaled up to work for Puerto Rico.

"Such a decision would be in the hands of the PR govt, PUC, any commercial stakeholders and, most importantly, the people of PR", tweeted Musk.

Governor Rossello tweeted at Musk shortly after with, "Let's talk". However, news site Electrek found third-party installers charging as much as $12,000 for the system and installation in Puerto Rico.

With Puerto Rico now relying on half its energy from importing and burning oil, while the rest comes from natural gas and coal, its inhabitants are having to pay high monthly bills for the utility.

Now if we could only tweak the simulation to turn the lights back on in Puerto Rico ...

"Sending experienced installers from continental U.S.to hire and train local team as fast as possible", Elon Musk said in a tweet, referring to the company's Powerwall battery system.

Tesla has already sent a number of its battery packs to Puerto Rico to help the island store energy in an effort to offset the shortage. "PR could be that flagship project", Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority is a huge problem Not only is the island's electrical grid decimated, but the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority is in a fiscal mess.

Miller responded to Musk's announcement that all Tesla cars already have the hardware needed for fully autonomous driving.

Despite the fact that Elon Musk argues that scalability is not an issue, both the islands that he has applied his vision to have significantly less population that the 3.5 million people of Puerto Rico. And if so, what would a Tesla-backed solar power project on the still-recovering island look like.
