Fellaini to miss Liverpool clash after Belgium confirm MCL injury

Fellaini was substituted less than half an hour into Belgium's 4-3 World Cup qualifying win away to Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday after an opponent landed awkwardly on his left knee.

But the midfielder was replaced in the 29th minute of Belgium's match in Sarajevo after going down with an injury sustained to his left knee.

Should he be out for two weeks he will miss next weekend's Premier League trip to Liverpool.

The manager added after the game, as quoted by Sky Sports: "We are all anxious about Fellaini".

That will have come as a concern to United, who are already without midfielder Paul Pogba due to what Jose Mourinho has described as a "long-term" hamstring injury, while Michael Carrick has been struggling with a knock.

Even though the Belgian ace may have avoided any major cruciate ligament damage, his sprained Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) will give Mourinho and the Red Devils' fans a major headache. Four goals from 8 games in all competitions have equaled the number of goals scored by Fellaini last season from 47 parties. Fellaini's absence means that Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matić will likely be in the limelight for the crucial clash with Liverpool at Anfield, with not a lot of other first team midfield options in reserve.

Belgium have already qualified for the World Cup next summer and will play a dead rubber against Cyprus on Tuesday.

A furious row is brewing within Old Trafford, claims the Daily Express, with Jose Mourinho said to be "at odds with the club over a new deal for Marouane Fellaini".
