A New Nintendo Trademark Hints Of Classic Mini Game Boy

In a Japanese Twitter account that seems to track trademarks (via Sora News 24; via Fortune), it makes mention of the Game Boy.

Though Nintendo is now more into mobile games, the Game Boy holds a nostalgic value to the fans. To my mind, the only real question in whether Nintendo will release a retro Game Boy console or a retro N64 console first. The SNES Classic Mini just recently hit the stands, and although it has 21 games on its own, a new hack is able to load up to 150 games in the library.

Given the success of the NES Classic, which sold out nearly instantly, it's no surprise that the SNES Classic has been all the rage since launching in Europe and the U.S.at the end of September. The tweet from the bot also notes that the filing covers programs and storage for "home video game machines" and "portable electronic game machines".

Nintendo appears to be toying with everyone's emotions yet again, filing a trademark application that included an image of the original Game Boy and igniting a handful of rumors, speculations, and general confusion about what exactly this company is up to.

Based on its recent console re-release trend, we're starting to think that gaming is simply a front for Nintendo and that the company has been working on a shrink ray for the past few years.

So, does this mean that a Game Boy Classic is in the works?

Nintendo has yet to confirm anything on the topic, but it did previously file a trademark for the Nintendo 64 and the prevailing rumour is that Nintendo are planning a Classic Mini version of that console. To use it, you just need to plug your system into a Windows computer using a micro USB cable, then run hakchi2 and follow the on-screen instructions.
