Darjeeling: Pollice officer killed in clashes with GJM faction

Amitabh Mullick died allegedly of bullet injuries in an early morning operation at a hide out of GJM president Bimal Gurung. It left a police officer and a civilian killed and several others injured.

"We have specific information that Bimal Gurung (GJM President) had instructed his cadres to attack police personnel", Sharma added.

Police found huge amounts of arms and ammunitions including nine AK 47 rifles, a Berretta pistol, over 1,800 rounds of ammunition, 20 gelatine sticks and more than 1,000 detonators in Darjeeling.

Last night, the police had conducted a raid in the Nimbu Basti area of Darjeeling to catch Bimal Gurung.

They were searching for the head of the party Bimal Gurung, who has been on the run since government prosecutors brought terrorism charges against him over a 104-day protest that crippled the region and left almost a dozen people dead.

The hills, after much struggle and suffering had returned to peace just a few days back on 27 Sep and just as the people were trying to be relaxed that finally there is peace, another incident disturbed the people of Darjeeling, forcing them to live under the feeling of fear. “We will not allow this to happen at any cost, even if we have to make sacrifices, ” he said. But Gurung has told local media he will address his supporters on October 30, urging local people to take to the streets on that day.

Early on Friday, police raided the area.

Inspector General of law and order, West Bengal police Anuj Sharma said that Gurung and his associates fled during the police operation. "And since his father is not that old we have made a decision to provide him with a job at the school department", Chatterjee said. Those who have been booked on charges of the UAPA will be prosecuted.
