Congress releases list of 59 candidates for Himachal Pradesh assembly polls

Dhumal, a two-time chief minister, will contest from Sujanpur instead of Hamirpur, which he represents in the outgoing Assembly.

The Congress is also yet to decide its candidate for Mandi where the BJP has fielded Anil Sharma who deserted the party and went into the BJP fold.

The state goes to the polls on November 9 and results will be announced on December 18.

Both Dhumal and Singh are Thakurs and this could have been a reason for the BJP giving prominence to the former chief minister in this election. The BJP, the main Opposition party in the state, has declared candidates for all Assembly seats.

Virbhadra Singh, 83, who has been declared as the Congress Chief Ministerial candidate, is pitted against the Bharatiya Janata Party's greenhorn Ratan Singh Pal. If the Congress wins, it would be his seventh term as the chief minister. Former Union minister Sukh Ram's son Anil is now representing Mandi. Dhumal and Union minister J P Nadda are seen as two most likely choices for the post of chief minister if the saffron party comes back to power in the Congress-ruled state.

BJP has fielded Rakesh Verma, the son of former top cop of Himachal Pradesh and chairman of HP Public Service Commission, R R Verma which Singh had close personal and family relations. Congress MLA Rajinder Rana has been fielded from Sujanpur. He was earlier a minister in the Virbhadra Singh government.

The Central Election Committee of the BJP met in New Delhi on Saturday to finalise the party's candidates for the Himachal Pradesh elections. Incidentally, the selection of women was the reason for the party delaying its list of candidates.

Vijay Jyoti Sen, sister-in-law of Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh's wife Pratibha, and former Congress leader Pawan Nayyar have been given tickets from Kusumpti and Chamba. Congress will be announcing the official list at the earliest.

Nominations for the elections that began on October 16 are closing on October 23.
