Drug Take-Back Day set Saturday

Bring prescription (controlled and non-controlled) and over-the-counter medications, ointments, patches, inhalers, non-aerosol sprays, creams, vials and pet medications to the Take Back location.

There will also be a collection site in the parking lot next to Kaiser Permanente at 3501 Stockdale Highway.

It'll be from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m.at the East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Boulevard SE, Iowa City.

Local law enforcement authorities are teaming up in support of a Drug Take Back campaign this Saturday. "That's why it was great to see thousands of folks from across the country clean out their medicine cabinets and turn in - safely and anonymously - a record amount of prescription drugs".

The Webster County Sheriff's Department is once again teaming up with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration to collect unused prescription drugs. In all, more than 4,050 tons of unwanted medications have been collected in DEA's 13 previous Take Back events.

The initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue because unused and expired medicines that are not disposed of are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse, according to the DEA.

Medicines left in home cabinets can lead to misuse and abuse of the drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends.

America is experiencing an epidemic of addiction, overdose and death due to abuse of prescription drugs, particularly opioid painkillers.

The Sheridan Police Department, Sheridan County Public Health and Walgreens have partnered to give area residents a way to dispose of old medications.
