Instant analysis of Bills' huge trade for WR Kelvin Benjamin

In exchange for Benjamin, Buffalo sent their third and seventh-round draft picks to the Panthers. The Buffalo Bills have upgraded their patchwork group of receivers by agreeing to acquire Benjamin in a trade with the Panthers. The Panthers do have an up and coming receiver in Devin Funchess, but after letting Ted Ginn Jr. walk in free agency this year, there isn't another legitimate option to plug in alongside the former MI man. Benjamin has 32 catches for 475 yards and two touchdowns this season. Led by former Carolina offensive coordinator Sean McDermott, the Bills are 5-2, just half a game behind the Patriots for first place in the AFC East. So far this season, Buffalo's wide receivers rank last in the National Football League in receptions (45) and last in receiving yards (594).

Kelvin Benjamin isn't the only big name player who was moved before the NFL's trade deadline for draft picks. After missing 2015, he returned in 2016 with 941 yards and seven touchdowns. That completed Florida State's flawless 14-0 season.

On the flip side, Benjamin's loss leaves a huge void in the Panthers passing game, which has not been the team's strong suit anyway. It means that Cam Newton is going to have to count on Devin Funchess and Curtis Samuel for the bulk of the receiving workload, and that's not ideal. Carolina hopes to get tight end Greg Olsen back following their bye week for the November 26 game against the Jets.
