Eight dead, 100 injured in blast at NTPC power plant

NTPC said the accident in the boiler of 500 Megawatt MW under trial unit of NTPC- Unchahar occurred on Wednesday afternoon.

"Ten people were dead and 100 injured in a blast in steam boiler at NTPC Raebareli", a statement issued by India's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said.

This plant was originally set up by the then UP State Electricity Board (UPSEB) and commissioned in 1986.

The National Thermal Power corporation plant is also called as Feroze Gandhi Unchahar Thermal Power Plant. this power plant is one of the coal-based power plants of NTPC.

Early reports stated that eight people had died, but by 8 pm, the death toll reached 14, DK Singh, Chief Medical Officer, Rae Bareli, confirmed to Firstpost.

ADG Kumar said that all available ambulances were pressed into action and the additional district magistrate and the additional superintendent of police were on the spot to supervise relief and rescue operations. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sadness for the tragedy and said he handles the situation.

Uttar Pradesh (UP) Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath has taken cognisance of the NTPC explosion and directed the Principal Secretary of the state home department to take all the rescue and relief measures.

"Congress president Sonia Gandhi expressed shock and horror at the bad tragedy in Raebareli", a statement by the party said.

The state government will also give Rs 50,000 for critically injured while Rs 25,000 for those who have suffered light injured.
