Mueller Revelations Put Sessions in Awkward Political Position

Trump once called him an "excellent guy".

Papadopoulos was living in London when he joined the Trump campaign as an adviser in March, according to a 14-page statement of offense signed by Mueller released Monday.

Papadopoulos continued to email high-ranking campaign officials about a request from Russian Federation to meet Trump.

Yet, in a reflection of the extent to which the Russian Federation investigation and his own role as a Trump campaign ally have dominated public attention, Sessions first appeared months ago before the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is conducting its own probe of election meddling.

Papadopoulos told investigators that he understood that one of the Trump campaign's main foreign policy goals was to improve relations between Washington and Moscow. If Sessions were pushed out, it would give Trump the chance to appoint a new attorney general - who would have the authority to fire Mueller and take over the Russian Federation probe. Many objected over the summer when Trump fumed at Sessions for recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation and began hinting he would fire his attorney general.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is once again under scrutiny on Capitol Hill regarding his candor about Russia and the Trump campaign amid revelations that he rejected a suggestion to convene a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump past year. The source said the request for clarification could take several forms, such as having Sessions testify again or submitting a clarification in writing, but that has not yet been determined.

Asked under oath at a Senate hearing last month if he believed Trump campaign surrogates had communications with Russians, Sessions replied, "I did not and I'm not aware of anyone else that did, and I don't believe it happened".

"Few people knew the young, low level volunteer named George, who has already proven to be a liar", Trump posted on Twitter shortly after 8 a.m. local time, adding: "Check the DEMS!"

Attorney General Jeff Sessions strongly defended President Donald Trump's firing of James Comey, but at a Senate hearing Wednesday repeatedly declined to discuss private conversations with the president about the dismissal, frustrating Democratic lawmakers who wanted to link the firing of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director to a broader inquiry into Russian election meddling.

Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, asked Sessions: "Did anybody in the campaign, did you ever overhear a conversation between you and anybody on the campaign who talked about meeting with the Russians?"

He added: "I certainly think it's a legitimate area of inquiry" for lawmakers to pursue.

But the chairman of Trump's national security team, then Alabama senator and now attorney general Jeff Sessions, shut down the idea of a Putin meeting at the March 31, 2016, gathering, according to the source.

Sekulow says: "The president has not indicated to me or to anyone else that I work with that he has any intent on terminating Robert Mueller". They say a professor told Papadopoulos in April 2016 that the Russians had "dirt" on Democrat Hillary Clinton in the form of emails. "He has laid out his reasons in the attached letter", a spokesperson for Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said in an email.
