Battle for Azeroth is World of Warcraft's next expansion

World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth does not have a release window, but Blizzard may change that during one of the many BlizzCon panels and events in the next few days.

World of Warcraft was the focus of some major announcements at this weekend's BlizzCon in Anaheim, California. Not only did developers announce the upcoming addition of a vanilla server, which would allow gamers to go back to WoW's roots and play as if they were playing when the game first debuted, but they officially unveiled the game's seventh expansion; Battle For Azeroth.

Horde players will be able to quest through the tropical land of Zandalar, while Alliance players will be visiting the seafaring kingdom of Kul Tiras.

As a champion of the Horde, travel to the Zandalar empire to persuade the trolls to lend their naval might. Races aren't the only unique feature of Battle for Azeroth, though, as players will also discover uncharted islands. On these new continents, players will recruit new "allied races" to bolster the ranks of their faction. Earn the favour of the Highmountain tauren, Void elves, Dark Iron dwarves, and others to create a new character of that race and add their strength to your faction. Players are encouraged here to battle in trios as they take on enemies in PvP or rival intruders controlled by the computer, collecting resources for their war effort. Players will here fight on the battlefield in 20-player co-op matches, capturing resources and claiming objectives against the enemy's commander, in a PvE mode said to be inspired by classic Warcraft RTS battles. Battle for Azeroth will revisit the central conflict of the Warcraft series, the Alliance versus the Horde, but along with it comes a wide array of features brand new to the experience. It starts with a siege in Lordaeron-Varian Wrynn leads the Allied forces in a fight against Sylvanas Windrunner and the Horde in a castle. Imbue the Heart of Azeroth-a legendary neck piece entrusted to each hero by Magni Bronzebeard-with Azerite to customise your armour with new powers and traits.

Enter the raging conflict between the Horde and the Alliance prepared to survive on the front lines of a vicious new war. Exactly how strong is not known- Blizzard no longer shares subscriber numbers, but there are enough users to warrant releasing another expansion for its lucrative gaming franchise.

Would official vanilla servers tempt you back to World of Warcraft?
