Iran: Thousands march on 1979 anniversary, chant anti-Israel, anti-US slogans

Iran marked the 38th anniversary of the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran on Saturday by displaying a missile and holding anti-U.S. demonstrations.

Criticism by the Donald Trump administration of a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major powers, including the United States, has focused heavily on Tehran's continuing missile program. Still, the Europeans share USA concern over Iran's ballistic missile program and "destabilizing" regional behavior.

One senior Iranian official accused the current US administration of a "crazy" return to confrontation with Tehran.

In 1979, hundreds of Iranian militant students took 52 Americans hostage at the embassy for 444 days to protest Washington's refusal to hand over the Western-backed shah, who was deposed in the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The US Congress must now make a decision regarding the nuclear deal, which saw Iran agree to limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Mr Shamkhani, alluding to Mr Trump's threats against North Korea, said even U.S. allies know that Mr Trump "has no power to realise his bluffs, against Iran, too".

The US cut its diplomatic relations with Iran following the embassy takeover and has had no diplomatic relations since. State TV said similar celebrations were being held in other Iranian cities and towns.

"Such foolish words reveal that the Americans are not only an enemy to the leadership and government of Iran, but they are hostile to the very existence of a tireless nation that has for decades stood against them", Khamenei told a group of students Thursday, according to Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency.

A recent survey conducted by the Afkar Iranian Center, a public opinion polling institute, indicates that 94.5 percent of Iranians do not trust the United States.

Khamenei's remarks Thursday came just ahead of the National Day in the Fight Against Global Arrogance, traditionally recognized on the 4th of Aban on the Iranian Shamsi calendar, a date that falls on Saturday.

In an interview with Iran IRIB1 Negahe Yek on Saturday, Salehi said Amano has a special responsibility at this time, and the IAEA is the only authority that can assess the obligations of the member states, and tries to take necessary measures according to the events occurring in the U.S. against JCPOA.
