Morocco Stun Ivory Coast To Join Tunisia In Qualifying For World Cup

Unlike Morocco, who missed out on four previous World Cup tournaments (Japan-Korea 2002, Germany 2006, South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014), Cote d'Ivoire has qualified for the three previous World Cups.

In Group A, DR Congo, on 10 points, were still in with a chance to catch leaders Tunisians on 13 points, but despite a late 3-1 win over Guinea, it was too little too late.

The win takes Congo up to 13 points, but Libya's failure to beat Tunisia means they end the campaign tantalisingly one point short of the North Africans.

Morocco has qualified for the World Cup in Russian Federation by winning in Ivory Coast 2-0 in what was a straight shootout for the place from Africa Group C.

The Moroccan national team played in the World Cup final last time in 1998.

They'll join Nigeria, Egypt and Senegal as the continent's five representatives at next year's tournament in Russian Federation.

The Atlas Lions just needed to avoid defeat in order to book their place in Russian Federation, but took all three points.

Nabil Dirar gave the visitors the lead 25 minutes into the game, cutting in from the right and seeing his left-footed cross go all the way in, raising serious questions over Sylvain Gbohouo goalkeeping.

Leaders Atlas Lions, managed by Herve Renard, who led the Ivoirians to the Africa Cup of Nations title two years ago, had nine points and needed just a draw to qualify for the Mundial, while second-place Elephants with eight points, needed a win. Benatia scored with a first-time shot from a corner five minutes later to seal the victory.

Meanwhile, Tunisia on Saturday booked their place in next year's finals after securing a point from a goalless draw at home against neighbors Libya.
