FDA Approves Pill That Can Track If Patients Swallow It

The developer of the sensor and patch technology, Proteus Digital Health, joined forces with Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., which produces the schizophrenia drug Ablify, to develop the smart pill, and this is the first time such a device has been approved by the FDA.

Used to treat schizophrenia and manic episodes, the Abilify MyCite aripiprazole tablet records whether the medication has been taken to ensure the patient is sticking to their regimtented treatment plan.

According to the FDA the digitally enhanced medication "works by sending a message from the pill's sensor to a wearable patch". Patients can also permit their caregivers and physician to access the information through a web-based portal.

For the most part, developing new medical technologies is a huge benefit to people.

The path to FDA approval has not been without problems, and despite each individual element (the drug and the sensor) already being approved by the FDA separately, the approval process for the Abilify MyCite has been delayed by FDA queries about the product's use and safety.

The technology is the product of research between Japanese pharmaceutical company Otsuka and Proteus Digital Health, and is created to solve the problem of people missing medicine doses, which costs the USA healthcare system an estimated $200 billion per year. The agency said it the first drug in the United States with a digital ingestion tracking system. And digital systems could spare time and resources by replacing current practices of having doctors or nurses supervise certain patients taking their medications, which is a common practice for patients taking antibiotics for tuberculosis, for example.

The sensor is made up of ingredients "found in food", the company said, noting that it was the size of a grain of sand and activates when the sensor material comes into contact with stomach fluid.

The pill has not yet been shown to improve patients' medication compliance - a feature insurers are likely to insist on before paying for the pill. Self-reported mood information can also be shared via the app, if the patient chooses. The FDA argues the opposite, and says the digital pill could actually be helpful for patients with mental illness.since taking their medications as prescribed is crucial.

However, this approval is the first significant step emphasizing how healthcare and technology are beginning to converge.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 6.7% of American adults experienced a major depressive episode in the past 12 months, while lifetime prevalence for bipolar disorder is almost 4% and for schizophrenia almost 1%. But the pill hasn't been approved for use here.
