CWC set to meet tomorrow

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has indicated willingness to take over the position of the party president.

The latest development comes in the backdrop of the Congress party's much-awaited working committee meeting on Monday.

Summary: Chief minister Vijay Rupani on Friday accused Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi of lying and quoting false figures to attack the state government.

Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision making body of Congress, will meet in Delhi today to decide the party's organisational poll schedule which will lead to its vice-president Rahul Gandhi's elevation.

Congress general secretary Ambika Soni, while speaking to India Today, credited the success of the entire campaign in Gujarat and opposition campaign on Goods and Services Tax (GST) and demonetisation to Rahul Gandhi. Sources claimed that the Rahul Gandhi is likely to be elected unopposed.

Even though it is clear that there will be no other contestant for the post of party president, the party's central election authority has said it will allow aspirants to apply from next week and keep December 1 as the last date for filing nominations.

The date of notification is likely to be 21 November, while the elections for the post of the party president may be on 8 December.

Analysts say that Rahul's election as the new Congress president just before the Gujarat polls will be an utterly bold move indicating the Congress party's election preparedness.

The Congress had deferred the organisational elections after Sonia Gandhi's five-year term as party president ended in 2015.

Rahul Gandhi's elevation looks a mere formality as numerous state units of the Congress have passed resolutions in support of Rahul Gandhi taking over as the new party president.
