FCC chairman reveals plan to kill net neutrality

Net neutrality is the principle that internet providers treat all web traffic equally, and it's essentially how the internet has worked since its inception. As has been discussed for months, if the new proposal is accepted by the FCC, broadband internet service will cease being subjected to Title II regulations and will return to an information service classification rather than a telecommunications one.

In a release, Pai said his proposal would prevent the government from "micromanaging the Internet".

Since his days as a divergent commissioner of the FFC, during the administration of Obama, Ajit has remained loyal in his pledge to replace the current stronghold of the government regulatory over the services of broadband with the previous light-touch framework.

The commission is expected to vote on the proposal on Dec.14.

Pai's proposal "represents the end of net neutrality as we know it and defies the will of millions of Americans, " the group's president, Michael Beckerman, said in an email.

Pai's attack on net neutrality has triggered protests from consumer groups and internet companies.

American consumers are used to thinking of their internet service as a public utility, similar to turning on the tap and getting a consistent stream of water.

The Internet Association had also said that the repeal will actually harm investment in the tech industry as "in a world without net neutrality protections, startups would face discrimination from ISP owned or preferred content that's granted a speed advantage through paid prioritization". Here are three ways an end to net neutrality could affect you. "Instead, the FCC would simply require internet service providers to be transparent about their practices so that consumers can buy the service plan that's best for them". In the same way, numerous signature companies in Silicon Valley think the internet should be open to all on an equal basis.

Republican Representatives Greg Walden, of OR, and Marsha Blackburn, of Tennessee, said Pai's plan shows the FCC "understands the importance of making sure the internet continues to flourish under a light-touch regulatory regime".

- FCC is expected to share the full text of its plans tomorrow, just a day before Thanksgiving, hoping that not many eyes will catch the bad news. A Democratic aide said Tuesday that "there might be room for [a] conversation" if Republicans were willing to enshrine the current rules into legislation, but that position is likely to be a nonstarter for GOP critics, who argued that the rules imposed unreasonable costs on businesses. "We believe", Verizon said in a statement to ABC, "that users should be able to access the internet when, where, and how they choose, and our customers will continue to do so".
