India asks Pak to ensure safety of Jadhav's wife, mom

India has said that they should "not be questioned, harassed or interrogated in any manner".

The Narendra Modi-led Indian government is not ready to send just the wife of Jadhav who is on the death row in Pakistan and also want his mother to accompany his wife.

Although Pakistan gave permission last week for Jadhav's wife to visit the country and meet her husband last week, India has however set some conditions to ensure the family's safety as well as guard against "dirty tricks" India expects Pakistan to play when his wife is there. Jadhav is a former Indian Navy officer held on espionage charges by Islamabad.

India continues to remain determined to "pursue all measures with full vigour so as to secure the final release of an innocent Indian".

India's response to Pakistan's offer was made as a note verbale to the Pakistan high commission in New Delhi and the foreign ministry in Islamabad.

While Pakistan is yet to grant visa to Kulbhushan's mother as the latter's wished, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said they have conveyed to Pakistan that Kulbhushan's wife would like to accompany her mother-in-law to Pakistan.

"Such a meeting offer does not absolve Pakistan of the violations of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and Human Rights and not following the due process in treating Jadhav who remains incarcerated in Pakistan and faces death sentence through a farcical process and on concocted charges", Mr Kumar was quoted as saying during a media briefing.

Islamabad recently conveyed to New Delhi through diplomatic channel that it was ready to arrange a meeting between Jadhav, a former Indian Navy officer now on death row in Pakistan, and his wife.

Pakistan's foreign ministry has said that it received India's response and is considering it, The Indian Express reported.

Islamabad had, in March 2016, announced the arrest of Jadhav from Balochistan.

The demand that an Indian diplomat be allowed as an escort is different from the request for consular access.

Pakistan has denied India consular access to Jadhav on the ground that it was not applicable in cases related to spies.
