JuD chief Hafiz Saeed released from house arrest

India yesterday expressed "outrage" over Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed's imminent release from detention, and dubbed it as an attempt by Pakistan to "mainstream" UN-proscribed terrorists.

Saeed is said to be the head of the USA -designated terror outfit, Lashkar-e-Taiba and had been under house arrest since 31 January this year.

Saeed was placed under house arrest in January while Sharif was still prime minister, a move that drew praise from India, long furious at Saeed's continued freedom in Pakistan.

The US has offered a US$ 10 million bounty for Saaed, who has been declared a global terrorist by the United Nations.

According to a BBC report, he said, "India has always levied allegations of terrorism. but Lahore High Court decision has proved that all of India's propaganda is false".

Official sources said that Saeed's release would invite strong criticism from India and the US.

The Lahore High Court on Wednesday ordered the release of one of the alleged masterminds of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which killed more than 160 people, after months of USA pressure on Islamabad over its alleged support for militants.

India's Ministry of External Affairs condemned Saeed's release, saying it showed Pakistan was not serious about prosecuting terrorists.

In 2006, the Pakistani government held him for several months for activities "detrimental" to its relations with other governments. Just after getting freed from jail, Saeed launched anti-India rhetoric by claiming that he would mobilize people for the "cause of Kashmir".

"The review board looking in to the case... has refused to extend his house arrest as the government failed to provide any evidence against the charges", a spokesman for the party, Ahmed Nadeen said. India pressurized Pakistan through thr United States.

As regards the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai, Pakistan has stonewalled every Indian effort - on the administrative and judicial plane - to have the perpetrators and their mentors brought to justice on the plea of sufficient evidence not being available to satisfy the Pakistani courts, which of course heeds only the ISI and the Pakistani military.

The Jamaat-ud-Dawa head was showered with rose petals as he walked out of a swanky white SUV to deliver his first sermon in Lahore on Friday.

In his declaration, he vowed that "I am fighting for Kashmir's independence".

In a video message after the court decision, Saeed claimed that he was detained because of his associations with the disputed Kashmir region.
