Ben Stokes: England all-rounder in talks with NZ side Canterbury

Ben Stokes is set to return to cricket this weekend for Canterbury in New Zealand.

However, it is understood Stokes is heading to New Zealand to practice and spend time with his family, rather than meeting up with his England team-mates.

Canterbury cricket club are in talks with Ben Stokes' representatives over his availability to play domestic cricket in New Zealand.

New Zealand Cricket spokesman Richard Boock said his organization "has yet to receive a formal request regarding Ben Stokes".

Stokes has been given a non-objection certificate by the European Central Bank to play domestic cricket although he remains suspended for England until it is made clear whether or not he will face criminal charges for his role in a late night altercation in September.

England, the Ashes holders, lost the first Test against Australia by 10 wickets in Brisbane.

This does mean that the 26-year-old will be only four hours from the England squad when they play the Second Test in Adelaide.

Stokes moved to England with his parents as a 12-year-old after his New Zealand rugby league worldwide father, Ged, took up a coaching job in Cumbria.

Avon and Somerset Police have not issued an update on their investigation into the incident in Bristol and England director of cricket Andrew Strauss has previously suggested that Stokes' involvement in the Ashes will hinge on inquiries being concluded.

Travel arrangements have not been arranged by them.

Stokes has not been ruled out of the five-test series, but the England and Wales Cricket Board will not consider him for selection until further notice as it awaits developments in the ongoing investigation.
