GES Summit 2017: Ivanka Trump in India

"We must ensure women entrepreneurs have access to capital, access to networks and mentors, and access to equitable laws".

Ivanka Trump lauded India as an economic success story and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his efforts on behalf of women in her keynote address Tuesday at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad.

India rolled out the red carpet on Tuesday for Ivanka Trump, daughter of the USA president, who was set to attend a business summit in the southern tech hub of Hyderabad, where thousands of policemen stood on guard. The senior White House adviser has always been considered a sort of whisperer when it comes to her powerful father.

"As President Trump said earlier this year: India has a true friend in the White House", she noted, without specifying the recent pronouncements of the U.S. administration favourable to India in the area of security, diplomacy and cooperation.

The gathering, co-hosted by the US and India, comes as the two countries appear to be working to strengthen ties.

Modi stressed the importance of women in Indian economics and culture and noted that the Indian Constitution guarantees one-third representation to women in local government. "I am proud that for the first time ever, women make up the majority of the 1,500 entrepreneurs selected to attend". "Through your own enterprise, entrepreneurship and hard work, the people of India have lifted more than 130 million citizens out of poverty - a remarkable improvement".

"Our administration is striving to promote greater opportunity for women around the world, both through our domestic reforms and our global initiatives", she said.

In developing countries, 70% of women-owned smaller businesses were being denied access to capital, she said, leading to a near $300 billion annual credit deficit for them. The former entrepreneur said when women work, it creates a unique multiplier effect.

The inaguration of the entrepreneurship summit will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and Ivanka addressing the grand event.

"You are rewriting the rules", she said and went on to talk about this year's GES theme.

Furthermore, Trump's visit is far better than if her father had gone to India.
