Tillerson 'to be sacked' in favour of Central Intelligence Agency boss Pompeo

Bob Corker (R-TN), that Trump has been damaging Tillerson's efforts and undercutting him at seemingly every opportunity. "Not only will the Koch Brothers now have a direct line to the State Department, Pompeo will lead US foreign policy down the same dark, bigoted and Islamophobic path of Donald Trump's Twitterfeed".

"There has been a kind of Cold War going on between these two", Wallace noted, adding there has seemed to be a rift between Trump and Tillerson on handling North Korea.

"Tillerson was one of the most blatant revolving door cases in the Trump administration and a clear sign that Trump's government was of, by, and for the fossil fuel industry", said Louaillier in a statement.

His slow approach to filling diplomatic openings at the State Department is also a factor, another official said.

At one point, Trump's chief of staff, John Kelly, telephoned Tillerson's chief of staff, Margaret Peterlin, to assure the staff that media reports of Tillerson's imminent ouster were not true. Both Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and retired Navy Vice Adm. Robert Harward are under consideration for that post.

Tillerson's likely ouster loomed awkwardly over an Oval Office meeting Thursday between Trump and the visiting Bahraini crown prince.

Kelle Louaillier, president of Corporate Accountability International, said that while ousting Tillerson, former CEO of ExxonMobil, might otherwise be a positive step, having Pompeo in charge of the U.S. State Department would be nothing to celebrate. "I serve at the appointment of the president and I am here as long as the president feels I can be useful to achieving his objectives". White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says there are "no personnel announcements at this time".

Tillerson, 65, has spent much of his tenure trying to smooth the rough edges of Trump's unilateralist "America First" foreign policy, with limited success.

If carried out, the staff changes would be the latest in a string of firings or resignations in the Trump administration including the departures of the chief of staff, national security adviser and Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

Indications are that Pompeo's departure from the Central Intelligence Agency would be followed by Sen.

He has offered effusive praise for Trump despite the president's criticism of USA intelligence agencies, some of which concluded that Russian Federation conducted an influence campaign to boost Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

Does the president still have confidence in Tillerson?

That comment came just three days after Tillerson held an extraordinary news conference last month to shoot down reports that he had called the president a moron.

He has also been a defender of the worldwide community's nuclear deal with Iran - an agreement Trump pledged to scrap on the campaign trail, and has continued to lambast after taking office.
