Why NC State football coach Dave Doeren chose the Wolfpack over Tennessee

The Volunteers were targeting NC State head coach Dave Doeren as of Thursday morning, but two sources have told SI that Doeren is staying in Raleigh.

As the Vols' coaching search continues to meander, the school reportedly contacted Doeren about the opening but he, as reported by Yahoo Sports' Pete Thamel, opted to return for his sixth season with the Wolfpack.

On the same day conflicting reports had the Vols had a deal/had no deal with Purdue's Jeff Brohm, the N.C. State coach emerged Wednesday as a (nother) serious candidate for the Vols. Doeren was hired by athletic director Debbie Yow after the 2012 season to build a top-25 program.

Doeren had considered an offer from Oregon State and was in preliminary talks with MS before talks with Tennessee reached the point where he was offered the job on Wednesday night.

As critical as Wolfpack Nation seems to be toward Doeren, his progress alongside perennial powerhouses like Clemson, Florida State, and Louisville can't be overlooked. Public backlash caused Schiano's deal to fall through, while the other three have all rejected Tennessee's offer. Not only does the Pack have one more game to play, but Doeren still has the prospect of adding to its recruiting class. NC State is No. 24 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.

Tennessee, which had paid former coach Butch Jones $4 million a year, had been prepared to pay Doeren the same amount, according to a source. NC State had seven All-ACC selections this season, its highest total since 2002, while Bradley Chubb was honored as ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
