Dem Intel Committee Leaders Stress Need For Independence After Flynn Plea

We hope that the cooperation of General Flynn that Special Counsel has secured as a part of this plea agreement extends to Flynn's cooperation with our committee, as his testimony could greatly advance our efforts.

Federal prosecutors revealed in court Friday that former national security adviser Michael Flynn had been in touch with senior Trump transition officials several times about his calls with the Russian ambassador, and at least one of the Trump advisers asked him to influence Russia's foreign policy.

But, he said, "through my faith in God, I am working to set things right. I think it goes well beyond the fact that he just lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation", said Warner.

Flynn asks for immunity in exchange for testifying to the House and Senate intelligence committees investigating Russia's involvement in the 2016 election, negotiations that were first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

In May, Trump fired Comey over "this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation", as Trump described it. Comey's ouster was a stunning event, one that led directly to the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel for Russiagate.

Flynn repeatedly denied that his conversations had included discussion of the sanctions and reportedly made the denials to other senior members of the administration - who then publically defended him.

An indictment filed by Mueller's office said Flynn "falsely stated" on December 29, 2016, that he did not ask Kislyak "to refrain from escalating the situation in response to sanctions that the United States had imposed against Russian Federation that same day", and that Flynn did not recall Kislyak "subsequently telling him that Russian Federation had chosen to moderate its response to those sanctions as a result of his request". Flynn also told authorities he did not recall the ambassador "subsequently telling him that Russian Federation has chosen to moderate its response to those sanctions as a result of his request", according to a court filing. He told a Trump transition official about that call.

"Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn", he said.

"It is part of an alarming pattern in which the President has already fired the FBI Director; pressured the Attorney General and top US intelligence officials to interfere with an ongoing investigation; and contemplated issuing pardons for his associates or firing the special counsel, according to numerous press reports", Warner continued.

"Separately, authorities say Flynn lied about asking the ambassador to delay a vote on United Nations Security Council resolutions".

"The false statements involved mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year", Cobb said. Mike Flynn has pled guilty to criminal conduct, while he was serving as National Security Adviser to the President of the United States, involving his contact with Russian officials.

The opposition Democratic Party was quick to slam Trump.

George Papadopoulos? Just a low-level "volunteer" for the campaign who wasn't even worth remembering for both President Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

But Trump has repeatedly rejected that view. As Mueller's probe intensified in the early months of the Trump administration, Gates left the nonprofit altogether.
