Final RFS figures closely resemble July proposal

"But the EPA failed to raise the advanced biofuels level by an equal amount".

"We're disappointed today, as we had originally pushed for a level of 2.5 billion gallons for biomass-based diesel in 2019 and 4.75 billion gallons of total advanced biofuels for 2018, but we'll continue in our work to develop even greater capacity within our industry, and we urge EPA and the Administration to take another look at biodiesel and the value USA soybean farmers bring to the domestic energy discussion", Moore said.

The Iowa congressional delegation isn't entirely happy with the EPA's 2018 final fuel volumes under the Renewable Fuel Standard program, but they say it'll have to do.

The amount of advanced biofuels will be 4.29 billion gallons, with biomass-based diesel the same as set in July at 2.1 billion gallons and cellulosic biofuel at 288 million gallons - 50 million gallons higher than the July proposal. The 2.1 billion gallon biomass-based diesel figure is identical to what last year's announcement required for 2018 despite industry calls for an increase.

Iowa congressional delates say the EPA's final rule on Renewable Fuel Standard volumes don't take advantage of the industry's potential for biofuel production.

. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said the final numbers "fall short of the full potential of the USA biofuels industry".

"Moving forward, we ask EPA to revisit the growth in cellulosic fuel production, particularly as first-generation ethanol producers expand cellulosic gallons made from feedstocks such as corn kernel fiber", Skunes said.

"The EPA's on-time announcement upholds the statutory targets for conventional biofuels, which will provide much-needed certainty for hard-pressed rural communities", said Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor". The 2018 rule stalls the steady and significant growth the volume requirements have seen under the program in every year since 2014.

"It appears that EPA did exactly what Sen. That is disappointing", he said in a statement.

An Renewable Fuel Standard proposal released by the EPA in July would have reversed, rather than stalled, the steady increase volumes have seen since 2014. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, threatened to block a key EPA appointee.

The Renewable Fuel Association, a biofuels industry group, said it was pleased EPA didn't scale back the levels, but argued the Renewable Fuel Standard needs to be a "forward-looking program" to drive investment in new technologies.

"I am disappointed that the 2019 biodiesel numbers were held flat at the bare minimum level that the administrator committed to", said Sen.

While campaigning for president in 2016, Trump promised to support renewable fuels.
