Shohei Ohtani won't sign with the Mets

Media reports indicated that the Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants are among nine teams to be granted a meeting with Ohtani. The two-way phenom reportedly is looking at a West Coast, small-market team. Two weeks ago, Ohtani's camp had sent a questionnaire to all 30 teams asking for an initial proposal as a first step in the negotiations.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Sunday night that the agents for Ohtani told him the two-way star is not signing with NY.

The Yankees made a presentation to Ohtani, but Cashman he got a feeling the team was not going to get a chance to sign the 23-year-old hitting and pitching star. "The feedback from that was outstanding". The Yankees, once considered a favorite, were told they didn't make the cut.

The winning team will put up a $20 million posting fee, and Ohtani will enter the 2018 season making the major league minimum of $545,000. Baseball rules said that any team willing to meet the posting price would get a chance to negotiate within a 21-day window through December 22. Money is not expected to be his primary interest.

With only three Japanese players now signed to major league contracts (Masahiro Tanaka - Yankees, Kenta Maeda - Dodgers, Junichi Tazawa - Marlins) in addition to four free agents and one minor-league contract (Ichiro Suzuki, Nori Aoki, Yu Darvish, Koji Uhera and Hisashi Iwakuma - Mariners), it will be interesting to see if Ohtani actually steers clear of his fellow compatriots. NY had accumulated the second-most global free agent money, which will be used to sign Ohtani, as major league rules limit the amount he can receive.
