Hands on: Asus NovaGo review

The NovaGo is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC.

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 845 today at as press conference in Hawaii, the next generation of the company's flagship mobile processor. "The 12.3" WUXGA touchscreen display features Corning Gorilla Glass 4 for increased durability and scratch resistance, and it is also compatible with an active pen. The companies announced all-new Windows on ARM PCs, including HP's Envy x2 and ASUS's NovaGo.

Built upon the Snapdragon 835 SoC, the Envy x2 will be available in configurations featuring up to 8GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of storage.

It nearly sounds too good to be true, so we've gone hands on with the NovaGo to see if the early signs are positive.

The big unknowns at this point, other than whether or not HP's battery life claims hold up to our own lab tests, is how the Snapdragon chip will stack up performance- and price-wise compared with competing Intel-powered PCs. These machines run full Windows 10 - so not some crippled Windows RT nonsense - and support 32bit x86 applications.

The Envy x2, in keeping with Microsoft's always-connected PC vision, purportedly sports long battery life, almost instant wake times from a sleep state, and ubiquitous LTE connectivity.

Qualcomm's future of the always-connected PC will see true all-day battery life, totally new designs of machines, and an operating system that boasts over 600 million users: Windows 10.

There are plenty of Microsoft Surface rivals - or clones if you like - out there and the HP Envy x2 is now another one.

The device is just 6.9mm thin and 1.54 pounds, it has 8GB of LPDDR4X PoP RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. That's the same setup found in many Android phones released in 2017, including Samsung's Galaxy S8 and Google's Pixel 2. Additionally, these type of PCs can run either Windows 10 or Windows 10 S: the first models from Asus and HP will actually run the more secure Windows 10 S out of the box, but customers will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free for a limited time.

We're likely to hear a lot more about the chip tomorrow, on day two of the summit, so stay tuned.
