Mueller investigation cost $6.7 million within first five months

Special counsel Robert Mueller has issued a subpoena to Germany's largest bank in a possible sign the investigation into Russian election interference may be expanding toward President Trump's finances.

Sekulow was responding to a report from German business newspaper Handelsblatt that Mueller had subpoenaed records from Deutsche Bank as part of his investigation into possible Russian involvement in the US presidential election campaign.

He says he's confirmed "this with the bank and other sources".

Specific requests of the bank were not immediately clear but ABC News has previously reported Deutsche Bank loaned the Trump Organization more than $300 million for real estate transactions prior to Trump becoming president.

Deutsche Bank is not the only Trump-related business interest that is attracting the attention of investigators.

Mr Mueller is looking into claims of Russian interference in the USA presidential election and potential collusion by Mr Trump's team - an allegation denied by the President and Russian authorities. The Mueller investigation now wants the bank to detail any ties between those trades or other Russian financing as it seeks to identify anyone connected to Donald Trump, his family or advisers.

A Justice Department report released Tuesday shows Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation spending $3.2 million between its formation in mid-May and the end September.

The president's financial records could potentially show whether Trump owes or has received money from suspects connected to Russian Federation.

Mueller filed charges against Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his business partner Rick Gates on October 30.

Mueller has already charged two people in the Russian Federation matter with money laundering: former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his business associate, Rick Gates.

On December 1, Mueller reached a plea agreement with former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to giving misleading the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his contacts with then Russian Ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak. That has indeed been a consistent line from Trump himself, the White House and the president's defenders: nobody did anything wrong, all the contacts with Russians were just routine, and there's nothing to hide.

Since the probe began in May, the special counsel has charged four people, two of whom have pleaded guilty.
