Trump Bashes WashPost Reporter for Tweet on Florida Rally Crowd Size

US President Donald Trump criticised "fake news media" on Sunday, calling it a stain on America.

Trump fired off a pair of tweets attacking Post reporter Dave Weigel over a "phony photo" of an empty arena ahead of his Friday rally in Pensacola, Florida.

Trump posted a screengrab of Weigel's Tweet on Saturday, along with photos of him standing in front of a packed arena.

But an apology was apparently not enough, because Trump nearly immediately mischaracterized what Weigel had said and called for him to be fired from the Washington Post.

Weigel noted that he deleted the tweet after being told by David Martosko, U.S. political editor of The Daily Mail, that he "had gotten it wrong".

Weigel responded in three minutes and apologised for his mistake.

At Friday's rally, Trump pointed to a CNN correction and other corrections and clarifications by news organizations in the past week.

Earlier on Saturday Trump resumed his attacks on "fake news" organizations, after CNN had issued a correction for a story about the Russian Federation probe.

Well, even if that is Trump, it is a backstage photo. I deleted it after like 20 minutes.

On Saturday night, the president posted a screenshot of Weigel's tweet and photos that showed a crowded arena. "Very fair to call me out", he wrote. "You should have been apologizing for the last two years", Trump said to laughter and cheers at a rally in Florida. Packed house, many people unable to get in.

ABC News initially issued a "clarification" of the story, later apologizing and suspending Ross for four weeks.

Johndec also implied that Trump overreacted to "fake news" that CNN later corrected about Donald Trump, Jr. receiving advanced notice from WikiLeaks about hacked documents it was going to release during the 2016 presidential campaign.

"Fake News CNN made a vicious and purposeful mistake yesterday", Trump tweeted on Saturday morning before tweeting about Weigel's photo.

The reporter's latest misadventure drew the full wrath of the president, who has been notably touchy about crowd sizes at his events ever since the inauguration.

"After taking office in January, he accused journalists of deliberately understating the size of the crowd at his inauguration and said that up to 1.5 million people were in attendance - a claim that photographs disproved", Johndec continued.
