Apple confirms software updates affected the performance of older iPhones

While Apple will probably be quick to point out that the software updates in question were meant to prevent users from encountering unexpected shut downs on phones with degraded batteries, the Illinois suit claims that Apple's failure to inform consumers about the full extent of these software updates is in direction violation of Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practice Art, along with similar consumer protection laws in IN and North Carolina.

The two California plaintiffs, Stefan Bogdanovich and Dakota Speas, are seeking damages saying that Apple's actions caused them to suffer "economic damages and other harm for which they are entitled to compensation". Earlier this week, some Redditors and few others complained that Apple is likely slowing down the iPhones as they age.

Apple didn't respond to requests for comment about the lawsuit.

But did the company slow down Iphones to prevent unexpected shutdowns as a battery deteriorated, as Apple stated. While it may be true that Apple really is trying to prolong the life of older devices with this feature, it's going to be hard dispel the initial thought that it's the company pushing people to upgrade every year - even if that's not the case.

Apple had previously acknowledged battery problems in some iPhone 6s devices that meant the phones would suddenly shut down and offered to replace batteries affected by the issue. The price is $79, plus $6.95 shipping, subject to local tax.

One group, in Chicago federal court, claims the software updates that throttle down the performance of iPhone 5, iPhone 6 and some iPhone 7s were intentionally put out to induce customers to buy newer iPhones such as iPhone 8 and iPhone X. That one retails for as much as US$1,149 (S$1,500) in the US.

Apple confirms software updates affected the performance of older iPhones

Apple claims its aim in throttling iPhone speeds is altruistic; it wants to help its users get the most out of their older batteries.

In a statement this afternoon, Apple explained that this "feature" was first implemented with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone SE a year ago and most recently came to the iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2.

This furstration, drawing enormous consumer ire and frustraition, can be pinned on no one but Apple themselves.

Owners of iPhones have long said that their devices seem to slow down over time and that replacing the battery seems to boost performance.

The company said it was to stop phones with degraded batteries from shutting down unexpectedly - not to push frustrated customers into upgrading.
