CHP officer killed in crash on I-880, another officer injured

The suspect was taken to a hospital where their condition has not yet been released.

KNTV reports that the officer killed in the line of duty has been identified as Officer Andrew Camilleri, 33, and the injured LEO has been identified as Jonathan Velasquez, who was treated and released from a hospital.

Officers responded shortly before midnight to reports of a collision in the southbound lanes of Interstate-880 just north of Highway 92 involving a red auto and a CHP vehicle, Bay Area television station KPIX reported. Police were called to the scene late Sunday evening after receiving a report about a collision involving a auto that rear-ended a CHP patrol vehicle. Both had safety belts on. The suspect is now in the hospital being treated for his injuries.

CHP confirmed Monday morning that one of the officers had died of his injuries. Governor Brown's statement on death of CHP officer: "Anne and I are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Officer Camilleri, who died yesterday while working to keep our communities safe".

He survived by his wife, Rosanna, a 12-year-old daughter and sons ages 6 and 2.

"Anne and I are profoundly disheartened to learn of the terrible loss of Officer Camilleri, who kicked the bucket yesterday while attempting to guard our groups".

Flags at the Capitol will be flown at half-staff in the fallen officer's honor.

Officer Velasquez was in the driver's seat of the patrol vehicle and suffered minor injuries. He is a 22-year-old man from Hayward and has not been identified at this time.
