WHO to classify 'gaming addiction' as mental health disorder

World Health Organization (WHO) has officially recognized that Gaming addiction will become a mental disorder next year. Some research indicates positive benefits of playing video games.

"Gaming Disorder" is all set to be classified as a mental health condition in World Health Organization's worldwide list of illnesses for the first time next year, according to the Independent. The WHO says that a diagnosis can be assigned after a period of 12 months, except when "all diagnostic requirements are met and symptoms are severe". The World Health Organization (WHO) is preparing to include it its new global medical coding guidelines.

The WHO has not listed other conditions linked to technology, such as so-called smartphone or internet addiction, due to a lack of evidence they are "real disorders".

The psychological benchmark for diagnosing mental health conditions, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), now lists internet gaming as a condition of further study.
