'Jerusalem embassy move a sovereign decision'

Palestinians want East Jerusalem - among whose shrines is Islam's third-holiest mosque, Al-Aqsa - as the capital of a state they seek in the occupied West Bank and in the Gaza Strip.

Not surprisingly, the Palestinians and Arabs are not welcoming the news.

"Dear people of Guatemala, today I spoke with the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu". Explaining that the Guatemalans would not make the move before the US did, Israel's ambassador to Guatemala said on Tuesday that it could take years, while US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson previously called three years "ambitious".

Katz's plan is in its initial planning stages.

The United States has hit back at the UN after being roundly rebuked over President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Trump's announcement has enraged the Palestinians and much of the Muslim world.

Trump's December 6 decision has drawn global condemnation, including in a Turkish-sponsored resolution overwhelmingly passed last week by the UN General Assembly.

The remark comes a day after Guatemala, a Central American country, joined the USA in recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moving its embassy to the city which is considered a place of pilgrimage for Jews, Christians and Muslims since the biblical era.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Erdogan has vowed to move his country's embassy to East Jerusalem in support of the Palestinians, but he'll have to get permission from the Israeli government first. It will join a slower railway already linking the two cities.

"We reject Guatemala decision to move embassy to Jerusalem & condemn it as absurd provocation, violation of worldwide law", tweeted Ayman Safadi, Jordan's foreign minister.

Despite the likely opposition to the project, Ovadia said he expects the plans to be approved in the coming year, barring major complications. The train will extend from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

"There's no reason why this train won't be built", said transport ministry spokesperson Avner Ovadia.
