Former Ballon d'Or Winner George Weah Thanks Liberia For Voting For Him

President Akufo-Addo has congratulated Liberia's president-elect, George Weah.

Former Ballon d'Or victor, George Weah who is on the verge of becoming the president of Liberia has thanked the citizens of the country for voting for him.

Ms Sirleaf took office in 2006, after her predecessor President Taylor was forced out by rebels in 2003, ending a long civil war.

Weah supporters paraded through the streets of the capital Monrovia and honked auto horns to celebrate the news.

Though the NEC has not made any pronouncement following the vote on Tuesday, unofficial results that are partly coming in appear to put Mr. Weah in the early lead against Mr. Boakai.

Weah, who topped the first round of voting but did not secure the 50 percent needed to win outright, is heavily favoured to win the presidential runoff.

Liberia's Electoral Commission says it will begin the announcement of provisional results of the 2017 presidential runoff on Thursday 28 December.

Weah grew up in Clara Town slum in Monrovia and went on to star for AC Milan, Paris St Germain and Chelsea and become the only African to win FIFA World Player of the Year.

It's hard to exaggerate the importance of today's poll which will seen one democratically elected government hand over to another for the first time in 73 years.

Weah has also fended off barbs over his vice-presidential pick, Jewel Howard-Taylor, the ex-wife of jailed former president and warlord Charles Taylor.

Legal challenges delayed the vote to replace Ms Sirleaf, and turnout was low.

The next leader of the West African nation, the successor to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, will be decided by Liberia's 2.1 million eligible voters.
