Protests Continue In Iran

At least 12 people have been killed in the ongoing protests in Iran, and armed protesters have tried to take over police stations and military bases, state TV reported Monday.

State media have now begun broadcasting some footage on the protests, though it focused on young men attacking banks and vehicles or burning the Iranian flag, reported AFP news agency.

Two of the other protesters were killed on Saturday in the Western town of Dorud during an overnight rally, according to the governor of Lorestan province.

The demonstrations, which erupted on Thursday in Iran's second city of Mashhad, are the biggest show of dissent seen since the huge rallies of the Green Movement were brutally suppressed in 2009.

In Tehran, some 4,000 people gathered at the Musalla prayer ground, calling for criminal trials for Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi, leaders in the Green Movement who have been under house arrest since 2011. Mehr also reported that two protesters died in Dorud on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Iran's Interior Minister Abdolrahman Rahmani Fazli said that the "chaos" that has spread across the country in recent days will not benefit them and they will respond to those who disturb the peace of people. Many in Izeh, some 455 kilometers (280 miles) southwest of Tehran, have hunting rifles in their homes.

"Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime's corruption & its squandering of the nation's wealth to fund terrorism overseas", he wrote.

"We have no information yet whether it was protesters or the police that fired yesterday [Sunday] and the issue is under investigation", the report quoted him as saying. These protests are nowhere near as large as the ones in 2009, but they are spreading day by day.

President Hassan Rouhani has said Iranians have the right to protest, but not cause disorder.
