Cardinals' quarterback Carson Palmer retires after 14 National Football League seasons

"Over the years, I've had teammates who chose to hang it up and I would ask them how they knew when it was time to walk away", Palmer wrote in his letter.

Palmer was a Heisman Trophy victor at USC and the No. 1-overall pick by Cincinnati in 2002.

Bruce Arians retired from coaching after five mostly successful and usually entertaining seasons as coach of the Cardinals.

"For me that time is now. Why?"

"What I'll never forget are the relationships - not just the unbelievable teammates and coaches, but all of those countless people at the Bengals, Raiders and Cardinals who work behind the scenes to make this whole thing run".

Unfortunately for Palmer, the end of his career was far from flawless. But he never was able to regain that form, taking a step back last season and suffering a season-ending injury in the Cardinals' 33-0 loss in London this season to the Los Angeles Rams. Palmer left that game with an injury and was later diagnosed with a broken left arm that kept him on the sidelines for the rest of the season.

He called his long professional career "the most incredible experience of my life".

Arians, who has been dealing with health problems, including a bout with kidney cancer, announced he was leaving Arizona, though that was widely expected.

Palmer's final career numbers included 46,247 passing yards, which ranks 12th all-time; he threw for 294 touchdown passes, which ranks 12th all-time.

The No. 1 overall pick in 2003 out of USC, Palmer spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he went to the playoffs twice and the Pro Bowl twice. He detailed what he will miss most by no longer being an National Football League player. Veterans Drew Stanton and Blaine Gabbert, who split starting duties after Palmer was injured, are both scheduled to become free agents.

Current Ravens linebackers coach Don Martindale is a possible candidate to replace Pees.

"Now it's time for something else, and I'm excited to find out exactly what that will be".
