Apple share price: All Apple devices affected by processing chip flaw

Apple is also working on patches and updates to defend against Spectre and will release them as and when they're ready.

Security researchers revealed the existence of the flaws on Wednesday, which could allow crooks to hack most computers or devices made in the past decade. "All Mac systems and iOS devices are affected, but there are no known exploits impacting customers at this time", Apple says.

Even so, as Devin Coldewey reports for Techcrunch: "If you're wondering why people keep saying, "mitigate" instead of "fix" or "counteract" or something, it's because Meltdown and Spectre take advantage of computing practices so basic that avoiding them is extremely hard and complex". Since exploiting many of these issues requires a malicious app to be loaded on your Mac or iOS device, we recommend downloading software only from trusted sources such as the App Store.

Apple further explains that for these bugs to really affect one's systems, they need to rely on apps with malicious code.

Apple said there are no known exploits for the vulnerabilities and said the iOS and MacOS updates "resulted in no measurable reduction in the performance of macOS and iOS" as measured by various benchmark tests. Data is supposed to be protected and isolated, but researchers discovered that in some cases, the information can be exposed while the processor queues it up.

If you thought your MacBook or iPhone would be immune to the Meltdown and Spectre microprocessor flaws acknowledged earlier this week by Intel, you would be wrong.

More news: CHP officer killed in crash on I-880, another officer injured

Apple this evening has officially released a statement on the Meltdown and Spectre bugs affecting ARM and Intel processors.

Fixing the problems will slow a computer's performance, experts say, especially on devices more than five years old.

The good news is that "there are no known exploits impacting customers at this time", and a fix could come soon, according to Apple.

The bigger challenge appears to be for companies that deal with a lot of network traffic and considerable processing power - things like cloud computing providers, retailers that process consumer transactions and medical systems that crunch data.

There aren't any processors available at the moment that can replace the vulnerable ones and still provide the same kind of functionality.
